The Kamikaze in the Valencia Highway Report
by
Javier Turégano (Avanzado 2, 2008-09)
The aim of this report is to describe the incident in the Valencia highway, the one which joins Madrid and Valencia, near Exit 35 to Albacete, last Monday, 11th of November. In the accident three cars and a truck were involved. As I was the only witness present at that moment, the police officers asked me to write a report. All happened really fast but I will try to do my best to describe events in that sad day.
The Accident
The day of the accident I was having a break from driving at a rest area in my way to Valencia. I was eating a sandwich when I was surprised by a really strange scene: a car driving in the opposite direction at top speed. Miraculously, the first two cars were able to avoid the kamikaze driver but eventually the later crashed frontally with a huge transport truck. Next, two more cars were not so lucky and crashed into the sides of the highway trying to avoid hitting the truck which was across the road.
The People Involved
I was not able to see the drivers of the truck nor the kamikaze who crashed first. Nevertheless, I could identify the people from the other cars. There was a big BMW, in which a couple was traveling. He was a middle-aged tall man in a grey suit and the woman, in a fur coat, didn't come out of the car for a long time. In the other car, a black Seat Leon, the driver was a young man wearing a cap and a black jacket. He looked unconscious.
First Reactions
The man in the grey suit was the first one who got out of his car, after checking that his wife was not physically injured, just in a shock state. While I was dialing the emergency number, he tried to go near the truck, but there was too much fire and smoke. Therefore he decided to try to help the other crashed car, where the young man had not made a move. Probably the door was blocked because, after trying to open it, the man decided to pull the body of the young man through the window. Next he started the resuscitation maneuvers until the other man started breathing again. I got to them just at that moment and the middle aged man asked me to stay with the injured man in order to go back to his wife. In that moment I noticed that he had a huge wound on his left arm, but he did not seem to have noticed it at all, probably because of the adrenaline effect of the moment.
The Rescue Teams
It was not before something like twenty never-ending minutes that we could hear the sirens approaching. The flames were extinguished rapidly by the firefighters. Luckily, the truck carried a ton of milk (which was now spread all over the ground) instead of any kind of dangerous material. The medical service took care of the injured people and extra support from a psychologist was requested by a paramedic by radio, to help with the woman -- who had a nervous breakdown. Sadly, there was nothing to do with the truck driver or the kamikaze, whose bodies were fully burned and impossible to recognize when the members of the rescue team were able to extract them from the wrecked vehicles.
