Report of a Car Accident on the M-500 Road
by Yolanda Bueno (Avanzado 2, 2009-10)
I have been asked to write a report of the traffic accident I witnessed after kilometre 100 on the M-500 road in Tres Cantos, Madrid, on 10th January 2009. The reason why I am writing this report is to give my personal account of the events so as to help the police carry out investigations on the crash.
On Sunday 10th January 2009 I was driving along the M-500 road to visit some relatives in Miraflores de la Sierra when I saw some cyclists riding in the opposite direction long in the distance. They were in a group of ten, riding in pairs and all wearing helmets. Seeing cyclists on the road is a common sight here because it is a lovely area.
The events developed very quickly: suddenly a Nissan Patrol driving in front of me lost control of its vehicle on a right-hand bend. The vehicle went up the verge striking a wall and coming across the road into the cyclists. Nearly all of them fell off onto the ground.
I stopped my car, called 112 and reached the victims. The driver had minor injuries but the cyclists were all badly injured. Some suffered broken arms or legs. One woman was bleeding from her head. However, the worst thing was that by the time the ambulance got there four people had not moved at all. Afterwards, I was told they had been killed.
As it had rained and frozen hard the night before, I think the car skidded on the ice of the road. The driver was driving at something like 60 km. per hour which, on a road like this, is not excessive speed.
In May last year the M-500 road in the Tres Cantos area was named among the 10 most deadly roads in Madrid by the police so maybe the local authorities should take further action.
